Troubleshooter of Error: ALL open applications crash simultaneously, randomly

ALL open applications crash simultaneously, randomly

I am experiencing an intermittent "system crash" of sorts unlike anything I have ever seen or heard of, roughly once or twice a day when I am using the computer.

Seemingly at random, any running non-microsoft program will surreptitiously close at the same time, and I cannot run any programs until I restart the system.
Strangely, explorer.exe is unaffected, as are paint, notepad, or any pre-installed microsoft software.
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it happens; I could be playing a game in fullscreen, watching a video online, or just typing an email when everything simply dies.
Windows stays running, explorer is responsive, but selecting a program to run will
just do nothing at all.

When this happens, the system event log will show an application error for each program thus closed, with an event ID of 1000 and "unknown" faulting module name and version, all with the exact same timestamp.
Interestingly (or not), werfault.exe is
almost always one of the programs that crashes, but if it is not crashing at the exact same time as everything else, it has within a minute or two prior.
I have no idea if that's significant, but it's something I noticed when looking at the error log.

Also of note, perhaps, is that when this first started happening, I would be greeted by a popup message that "Windows has detected that this program did not run correctly and applied compatibility settings" for each program that was running.
That message does
not appear lately, which could simply mean that the compatibility settings in question have already been applied to every program that I normally have running.
Note, I do not know where these settings are located, since the compatibility tab of the executable
properties does not show any settings.
I assume it's something stored and handled internally within Windows (and, as an aside, I would like to know once this problem is fixed how to revert those settings for applications that I know do not need any sort of
compatibility "fixes").

Anyway ...
I'm pretty stumped.
If anyone has any idea why this could be happening, or if you need some more information about my system or setup, respond here and I'd be most happy and appreciative to help work this thing out.
