Basic to Dynamic disk error on a HP Mini Laptop with Windows 7 Starter
I have just bought a HP Mini 110-3713TU that comes preinstalled with Windows 7 starter.
At present it has a basic disk with 4 primary partitions.
The partitions are named SYSTEM, C:, RECOVERY (D:), and HP_TOOLS (E:).
All these partitions are NTFS, except
HP_TOOLS(E:) partition which is FAT32.
I need to repartition drive C: so that I have a separate partition for data incase the C: drive needs to be reformatted for system recovery.
I was able to shrink the C: drive, and extract about 100 GB of unallocated
space.
The only options available in my system to format that unallocated space is to create a simple volume.
After choosing this option I get the New Simple Volume Wizard in which I select all the default options, and after I click on Finish, I get a warning
message that states "The operation you selected will convert the selected basic disk(s) to dynamic disk(s).
If you convert the disk(s) to dynamic, you will not be able to start installed operating systems from any volume on the disk(s) (except the current
boot volume.) Are you sure you want to continue?".
After I click on yes on this warning, I get an error message that states "Dynamic disks are not supported by this operating system or server configuration.
Dynamic disks are not supported on clusters."
Can anyone show me a way to achieve my goal short of reinstalling the operating system or upgrading to another version of Windows 7?

Well if you use the system recovery it will put the system back to origonal condition, and in doing so destroy any partition you have created.
And of course if the drive fails everything will be lost.
Better to have backed up your data to external.
BTW You have created the recovery disk set?
Run CHKDSK
- Go to the Start button.
- In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
- At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
- Reboot your computer.
"Access denied as you do not have significant privileges. You have to invoke this utility in elevated mode."
If you receive the above error message, it means you are not logged into you computer as an Administrator. If that's the case, follow these steps to run the command prompt in elevated mode:
- Go to theStart button.
- Go to "All Programs > Accessories" and right click on "Command Prompt".
- Select "Run as Administrator".
- In the Search box, type "cmd" (without quotes) and press Enter.
- At the command prompt, type "chkdsk /r /f" (without quotes) and press Enter.
- Reboot your computer.
