Can I restore windows with a system image stored in a folder?

I have a Western Digital My WorldBook 1 TB external storage device that I am backing up my Win 7 Pro machine to.
 The WD came pre-configured with three folders at the top level: Configuration Share, Download Share and Public Share.
  

When I created my W7 backup, I created a folder within the Public Share and included the system image.
 Everything backed up without errors.
 

I've never had to restore from a system image before and I'm wondering if that will work with a folder or does it need to be a bootable disk or media?
