Can you have both .Net Framework 3.5 and 4.0 on 64-bit Windows 7 ?

Greetings.
I am trying to install ESRI's ArcGIS 10 on my 64-bit Windows 7 system.
ArcGIS requires .net Framework 3.5, but 64-bit Windows 7 seems to come with .Net Framework 4 installed.
The tech on the ESRI support forum said this:
"3.5 is provided on the ArcGIS media as a separate installation.
However, on Windows 7, .NET 3.5.1 (3.5.1 = 3.5 SP1) is only available as a Windows Feature - it just needs to be turned on.
Windows Features are accessible from the Uninstall or Change a Program
UI."

He followed it with this:

"Installing .NET 4.0 does not turn on the .NET 3.5.1 Windows Feature.
I just tested it on Windows 7 to confirm.
On my machine, .NET 3.5.1 is turned on by default.
So in many cases, .NET 3.5.1 may already be on the machine when .NET 4.0 is installed without
any additional configuration.
I turned off the .NET 3.5.1 feature and installed .NET 4.0 - the 4.0 install did not turn back on 3.5.1.
...
.NET 3.5 SP1 must be separately installed."
 
So I'm still not sure what to do.
Can I turn on 3.5 and run 3.5 and 4.0 together? Do I need to remove 4.0? Thanks.

For Windows 7, .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1 is shipped with it as one of OS component.
For .NET Framework 3.5 with SP1, it includes .NET 2.0 with SP2 and .NET 3.0 with SP2 as prerequisite.
This means, you have the .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1 plus a few post 3.5 SP1 bug fixes on Windows 7.
They are
OS components.
.NET 3.0 SP2 and
3.5 SP1 can be added or removed via the Programs and Features control panel.
Thus, we don't need to manually install them.

Each .net framework is a individual program, that developers use to create programs.
Programs created by a .net framework need the same .net framework installed, if not found the
program requesting this item will ask for the item to be installed..
You can download and install .net framework 4.0.
I have installed .net framework 4.0 client profile,
and .net framework 4.0 extended.
These will show in add and remove list.
Keep them all on, they are individual programs.

To check for Windows updates. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update. In the left pane, click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer. If any updates are found, click Install updates.

Install the latest updates for Windows and for the program displaying the error. Note that the update for the program might be listed as an optional update on the Windows Update page.

Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button. In the search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click Windows Update.
