Can't edit a 30 minute video that plays in 0.03 seconds!

I'm trying to use movie maker for W 7.  When I hit play nothing happens.  It shows my movie as being 0.03 seconds long.  It is about 30 minutes.  This is a session of my family performing multiple songs live.  I want to take out parts in between and burn
a disc without all the wasted time between "scenes".  Saved as a VOB file?

.VOB is not a supported format in Windows Movie Maker.
Windows Live Movie Maker(WLMM)14Supported formats:
• Windows Media Video (WMV)
• Windows Media , DA-AVI
• Microsoft Recorded TV Show
• 3GP
• 3GPP
• MPEG-2
• Motion JPEG
• JPEG
• GIF
• Bitmap
• PNG
• QuickTime .mov (Windows 7) and .qt (Windows 7)
• AVCHD (Windows 7)
• MPEG-4 files (Windows 7)
 You can use a third party software to convert the files to any of these formats and then try to edit the video again.
Search using your favorite search engine for more information.
 NOTE: Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Third Party Software can be solved.

Tweak IE Options

• Open Internet Explorer.
• Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
• Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
• Click "Apply".
  
• Reboot your computer.
