why does system restore not work and takes overnight?

I can't get system restore to complete, even leaving it overnight, the whatever sign still goes round and round and I have to get the laptop going again without having achieved anything.
Last time I took the battery out and turned off the power for about
an hour just to get it back to normal without any restoration.

I would suggest you to follow these steps and check if it helps.

Try performing clean boot and check if it helps:

Tweak IE Options

• Open Internet Explorer.
• Go to "Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab".
• Uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions".
• Click "Apply".
  
• Reboot your computer.
