Why isn't Protected Mode enabled by-default for "Lockdown Zone 0" and "Zone 0"?
"Lockdown Zone 0" is the registry sub-key that applies to Zone 0 while "Local Machine Lockdown" is enabled, while
"Zone 0" is the registry sub-key that applies to this same zone while Local Machine Lockdown is disabled.
(Zone 0 = "Local Machine Zone" or "My Computer") Upon examination of the Windows Registry on a Vista workstation, I found that Protected Mode
is disabled by default in both of these sub-keys.
Zone 0 is the most-vulnerable security zone in Internet Explorer; it is this zone for which the security policy of
"Local Machine Lockdown" was first implemented (i.e., starting with IE 6 for XP SP-2).
I therefore, have the following questions:
Why is it disabled by-default for this zone? Wouldn't it be smarter to have it enabled by default, so that the user need not worry when giving permission for active content such as
active scripting (which includes JavaScript) to run within Zone 0 (e.g., CDs/DVDs), or even have active scripting enabled by default, as the other browsers do?
Would there still be risks involved while running active content within Zone 0 while Protected Mode is enabled? If so, please explain.
What functionality would the user be giving-up by having Protected Mode enabled for Zone 0?
Is Protected Mode for Zone 0 also disabled by-default for Windows 7?
Answers to the above would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance! ;)
